Chapter 5 - Friday. Underwater.

Overview

Harry spirals at a bar, clashes with Møller, and replays how his secret hunt for Tom Waaler as Prince wrecked his home life and led him to Kripos with a risky accusation. Meanwhile, Beate finds a Glock and a star-cut red gemstone on Camilla Loen’s eye, tying the murder to illicit arms.

Summary

Harry drinks alone at the Underwater pub until Bjarne Møller calls, warning that an officer planned to report Harry for arriving intoxicated at the Loen crime scene. Harry demands to be taken off the case and leaves in a taxi for Rakel’s house, hesitating outside and drifting into memories.

Harry recalls the past winter: his consuming pursuit of Ellen Gjelten’s killer and his belief that Tom Waaler is Prince, the arms-smuggling ringleader. A dubious witness, ex-neo-Nazi Roy Kvinsvik, identified Waaler with Sverre Olsen on the night Ellen was killed. Fearing moles, Harry worked secretly, tailing colleagues and staking out locations, which strained his relationship with Rakel and Oleg.

Harry remembers a freezing night when Waaler compassionately aided an overdosed burglar, unsettling Harry’s assumptions yet not dispelling his suspicion. As pressure mounted, Harry brought his thin case to the head of Kripos, who agreed to meet the witness and keep the matter confidential.

Back in the present, Beate Lønn calls with updates from Camilla Loen’s scene: a Glock 23 with a filed-off number found under the sink, bearing familiar file marks common in Oslo’s illegal arms. Crucially, the pathologist found a small reddish, star-cut gemstone on Camilla’s eyeball, likely a diamond. Harry, insisting it isn’t his case, ends the call.
