Chapter 36 - Monday. The Photograph.

Overview

Police leadership secretly delegates the hunt for Harry and Sven to Waaler, granting him wide latitude until midnight. Waaler’s network coerces a journalist and a telecom technician to track Harry. Forensics finds Sven at Frogner Park on Saturday, and Harry secures a Prague photo implying Waaler met Sven—plus a startling hidden clue.

Summary

Before dawn, senior officials meet at Police HQ about Harry Hole removing suspect Sven Sivertsen from custody. The Divisional Commander agrees to keep the disappearance secret until midnight, giving Tom Waaler authority to use “unconventional” methods. Bjarne Møller, uneasy, observes Waaler being tacitly endorsed.

Simultaneously, Forensics’ Bjørn Holm canvasses Japanese tour groups for Frogner Park photos. Crime reporter Roger Gjendem is threatened by a policeman to lure Harry into revealing his location, with Roger’s imprisoned brother used as leverage.

At Telenor, Klaus Torkildsen is blackmailed into covertly monitoring Harry’s mobile and contacts. Beate Lønn coordinates photo intake; she finds Sven photographed in Frogner Park on Saturday at five, which corroborates part of his story but not an alibi for Barbara’s murder. Harry, exhausted and under pressure, demands proof of Sven’s claim: a Prague photo with Waaler.

After a scuffle, Sven calls his pregnant girlfriend, Eva Marvanova. Beate warns Harry their lines and email are being recorded, so she cannot receive anything. Using a different computer and a decoy phone, Harry has Eva email the Prague photo to an alternate address. The image shows Sven with a man from behind who appears to be Waaler—but something else in the photograph shocks Harry, suggesting a disturbing, calculated connection.
