Chapter 35 - Sunday Night. Fascinating Nonsense.
Overview
Harry secures Sven and extracts a full account: the Prague past, links to Waaler/“Prince,” and a series of gun-and-diamond drops at Frogner Park timed to the murders. The items in Sven’s case were for the latest handover.
Simultaneously, Olaug reports her lodger Ina missing, and Harry quietly recruits Beate’s help, tightening the net around Waaler while pursuing the actual killer.
Summary
Harry hides with Sven Sivertsen in a hotel room, handcuffing Sven while Waaler’s team likely searches the city. Harry’s original plan—to teleconference Sven’s testimony to command and force Waaler’s arrest—collapses under Sven’s ultimatum, so Harry pushes Sven to tell his story.
Sven recounts meeting his father in Berlin, being drawn into diamond smuggling, and later moving to Prague after his father’s death, where he lived by seducing married women. He fell genuinely in love with Eva and, needing money to secure her, escalated into arms smuggling and met “Prince” (Tom Waaler) twice in Prague, having Eva covertly photograph them as insurance.
In spring, a Norwegian caller who knew Sven’s history commissioned specific deliveries: blood-diamond “devil’s stars” and handguns with silencers. The drops had to occur at Frogner Park beneath the Monolith, amid crowds, with items left in a green litter bin. These handovers recurred at five-day intervals; the final weekend required two deliveries (Saturday and Sunday). The gun and diamond found in Sven’s briefcase were for Sunday’s scheduled drop.
Harry returns with food, implies the tourist-photo angle matters, and unlocks Sven, noting they share risks. Meanwhile, Olaug Sivertsen, besieged by press and fearing police error, worries that her reliable lodger, Ina, has not returned. She calls Beate Lønn late at night to report Ina missing; Beate promises to alert the control room.
After trying to rest, Beate receives a call from Harry, who admits he trusts only her and asks for help, signaling a covert alliance against Waaler while Harry holds Sven and pursues the real killer’s pattern around the park drops.
