Chapter 43 - Monday Night. Rolex.
Overview
Harry, Oleg, and Sven hide in a stopped lift, darkening it to avoid exposure. Harry retrieves his gun from the refuse room and confirms the threat’s status. He discovers Tom Waaler dead at the basement door, ending the immediate danger and confirming the violent confrontation’s fatal outcome.
Summary
Harry sits in a stopped lift with Oleg and Sven, counting the seconds by the tick of Tom Waaler’s gold Rolex, still attached to a blood-smeared arm cuffed on the floor. He removes the handcuffs and has Oleg help detach the lighting tubes so their eyes adjust and they are not exposed when the doors open.
Believing Waaler may still be a threat, Harry sends the lift away and slips into the basement darkness. He navigates storage cages toward a dimly lit door, first retrieving the taped gun from the refuse room and confirming it is loaded.
Approaching the light, Harry spots a face pressed to the door window. He aims, then realizes the person cannot see him. It is Tom Waaler, eyes glazed with a bluish film—dead. Whatever Waaler had been staring at has gone. Harry acknowledges the end by resting his forehead against the cold glass, face to face with Waaler’s corpse.
