Chapter 22
Overview
Rain kidnaps Winslow, forcing her up Indigo Ridge to stage another fake suicide and revealing her motive: punishing Frank’s affairs. As Briggs approaches and Griffin’s new fence blocks the summit, Rain drives Winn downhill. Winn fights back; Rain falls to her death. Griffin reaches Winn, frees her, and rushes her for help as she loses consciousness after they exchange I-love-yous.
Summary
Winslow regains consciousness bound and concussed as Rain Nigel drives her up Indigo Ridge at knifepoint. Rain admits Frank was obsessed with Lily and Harmony and frames her killings as his punishment, revealing she lured victims, struck them, and staged suicides. She threatens to do the same to Winn.
Winn stalls, searches for an opening, and needles Rain with questions, provoking slips that confirm Rain planted Lily’s and Harmony’s items. Rain slashes Winn’s arm and belly to force compliance. Near the summit, Griffin’s newly built fence blocks the trail, stalling their ascent.
Briggs Eden’s flashlight appears from the cabin side, so Rain pivots, her knife at Winn’s throat, and drives her downhill. At the steepest slope, Rain prepares to shove Winn over. Winn kicks Rain’s knee, breaks free, and runs, but Rain catches her and stabs her twice during a close fight.
Headlights arrive at the trail base. Seizing a final chance, Winn rams Rain’s ankles, sending Rain over the edge to her death. Griffin reaches Winn, cuts her bindings, and tries to carry her out. As he urges her to stay awake, they exchange confessions of love. Winn loses consciousness in his arms.
