Chapter 20
Overview
Griffin implicitly asks Winslow to move in, intensifying their relationship as Winslow weighs commitment. Pops announces his retirement and counsels Winslow on the Lily and Harmony cases. A casual visit turns dangerous when Winslow links Rain’s Jeep to Indigo Ridge, prompting Frank and Rain to attack her, revealing a shocking new threat.
Summary
Over breakfast, Griffin points out that Winslow already lives in his house and suggests she make it official, even offering to help sell her place. Winslow is tempted but hesitates because neither has said “I love you.” She spends the morning cleaning and reflecting.
Seeking clarity, Winslow visits Pops. He announces his decision to retire after his heart scare and affirms his pride in his tenure. Winslow confides her stalled investigation: Harmony’s purse and Lily’s wallet were found at Briggs Eden’s with only his fingerprints, suggesting someone planted them. Pops urges her to accept possible dead ends but acknowledges her need for answers.
They reminisce about Winslow’s parents; Pops reveals they disliked Skyler and would have loved Griffin. The memories comfort Winslow. They play backgammon into late afternoon, and she leaves for Griffin’s place.
Outside, Winslow stops to greet Pops’s neighbors, Frank and Rain. Frank mentions Rain’s missing Jeep hubcap. Winslow notices a matching cap on the front wheel, recalling an identical one found on the road to Indigo Ridge—private property tied to Lily’s death. Realizing Rain drives the Jeep, Winslow connects Rain to that road.
As the implication dawns, Rain tells Frank to close the garage door. Frank hits the opener while Rain raises a meat tenderizer. Winslow comprehends that trusted neighbors may be involved, but she reacts too slowly. Rain strikes, and Winslow is knocked unconscious.
