Chapter 12

Griffin wakes with Winn, debating their undefined status as gossip spreads. Winn resists labels after a long past relationship and suggests limiting their encounters, but Griffin refuses and they have urgent sex, affirming their inability to keep distance.

At the ranch, Griffin finds his mother in his kitchen. She shares that Briggs failed to recognize her at his cabin, confirming severe cognitive decline and sparking a fight with Griffin’s father, who is in denial. Griffin worries about potential harm and briefly reexamines whether Briggs could be tied to Lily’s death, ultimately rejecting the idea.

During this conversation, Griffin learns for the first time that Winn’s parents died in an accident years ago—news Covie kept quiet while grieving—leaving Griffin unsettled that Winn hadn’t told him and revealing how little they have shared beyond the physical.

Griffin then spends the day moving cattle to forest service grazing. Returning home, he finds Winn waiting. They flirt over his horse Jupiter and share beers on the porch. Griffin ignores a barrage of family calls and texts, choosing Winn instead.

Watching Winn peaceful on his porch, Griffin recognizes his growing attachment despite his intent to keep life focused on the ranch and family. He carries her to his bedroom, acknowledging they will burn out someday—but not yet.
