CHAPTER 31: Stand Your Ground

Overview

On the morning after Heroes Day, Shae duels Ayt Mada before a public crowd at Juro Wood. Shae fights fiercely but is disarmed and badly wounded, then concedes to preserve aisho. Ayt spares Shae and takes her jade, while Hilo’s hidden blockade pressures restraint and prevents an immediate return to war.

Summary

On the eve of their duel, Shae wrestles with fear and the weight of her clean-blade challenge, knowing it is the only way to restore her credibility and protect No Peak after Ayt’s public accusations. Hilo rages, then demands she win; Kehn voices pragmatic support. That night in the prayer room, Hilo unexpectedly joins Shae, then pushes her toward rest and readiness.

At dawn, Shae dresses lightly, prudently removes some jade to limit potential loss, and arms herself with her finest moon blade. On arrival at Juro Wood’s Garrison House, a massive crowd awaits. Ayt appears composed and fully jaded. Before the duel, Hilo quietly reveals he has positioned No Peak Fists to seal exits and target Mountain assets if Shae falls—an implied violation of clean-blade aisho that would reignite war. Horrified, Shae realizes her death could trigger catastrophe.

The duel begins. Ayt’s skill and power meet Shae’s speed and youth; steel and jade crash in a blur. Shae narrowly deflects killing strikes and manages a fierce counter that wounds Ayt, slicing off half her ear—a shocking, symbolic injury. Seeing a fleeting opening, Shae presses, but Ayt seizes Shae’s sword hand, disarms her, and delivers a devastating abdominal cut.

Kneeling, bleeding, and unarmed, Shae immediately concedes, publicly praising Ayt’s prowess to preserve aisho. With No Peak fighters now visibly sealing the grounds and tension spiking among both clans, Ayt weighs the moment. Killing a surrendered opponent would brand her merciless and justify Hilo’s retaliation. Ayt lowers her blade, accepts Shae’s jade, and declares her blade clean.

As the crowd breathes in relief, Ayt quietly vows Shae will live to see No Peak’s ruin. Jade loss and blood loss overwhelm Shae; Dr. Truw stabilizes her as Hilo and the Maiks rush in. The duel ends without war, but Shae suffers a costly defeat and the Mountain gains her jade.
