CHAPTER 39: A Meeting of Pillars

Anden and Rohn Toro await Hilo’s delayed flight in Port Massy. Hilo and Maik Tar arrive; Hilo greets Anden warmly but with lingering reserve, and they are introduced to Rohn. Opting to meet immediately, they drive through the city as Hilo observes Port Massy’s landmarks and Anden tentatively plays host.

At the Dauks’ home, Hilo charms Dauk Losun and Dauk Sana over an elaborate dinner, noting the household’s bluffer’s jade and offering hoji from Janloon. Hilo exchanges family talk, revealing his two sons and another child expected, while subtly assessing Cory.

After dinner, the leaders sit for serious discussion, with Sana and Cory remaining at the table by Dauk’s choice. The Dauks outline the secretive existence of Espenian Green Bones, worsening Crew aggression, and legal constraints. Hilo questions them like a Horn: numbers, organization, and the structure of Boss Kromner and Skinny Reams.

When Hilo proposes bringing all Bosses into one room, Dauk fears an ambush and community reprisals. Hilo clarifies he respects Espenian law and Dauk’s authority; his intent is to learn and negotiate leverage, anticipating the Bosses’ interest in the jade trade. He signals a strategy to fight on multiple fronts—street and backroom—without provoking legal disaster.

The meeting adjourns amicably. Rohn drives the visitors to their hotel, and Hilo invites Anden for a nightcap. In the quiet bar, Hilo, exhausted but affectionate, gives Anden photos of Ru and Niko and asks about Anden’s life, marking a tentative reconciliation and the start of Hilo’s Espenian campaign.
