CHAPTER 63: Home at Last

Overview

Anden returns to Janloon to a changed city and home, learns Wen survived with lasting injuries, and attends to the cover story arranged by Shae’s office. Grieving Rohn, Anden reconciles with Hilo and commits to study bioenergetic medicine, choosing to wear jade only to heal, not to kill.

Summary

Anden arrives in Janloon, absorbing a city both familiar and transformed by new construction, festival signs, and typhoon damage. At the Kaul house, he briefly meets Fists Juen Nu and Lott Jin, then notices the home’s changes, now clearly filled with children. Kyanla greets him warmly.

In the courtyard, Anden and Hilo finally face each other. Hilo explains Wen’s condition: alive but with brain damage, partial paralysis, and speech difficulties. He outlines how Shae’s office, through Hami Tumashon, arranged a cover that pinned Zapunyo’s death on internal betrayal and gang violence, enabling Wen’s evacuation and Anden’s later release.

Anden recalls Rohn Toro’s funeral and his failure to save Rohn despite reviving Wen, as well as the Dauks’ support. He meets Cory one last time; Cory remains hurt but wishes Anden well in returning home.

Back with Hilo, Anden apologizes for being involved in Wen’s operation. Hilo, conflicted by Wen’s long concealment of her activities, credits Anden with saving her life. Anden asks for understanding rather than forgiveness and confesses his decision: to enroll in bioenergetic medicine and wear jade solely to heal, not to kill.

Hilo accepts Anden’s return and urges him to move back home. The scene ends with Hilo introducing his children to Anden, marking Anden’s reintegration into family and clan life with a new, restorative purpose.
