CHAPTER 32: Overdue Conversations
Overview
Shae returns from the duel gravely wounded but determined, refusing to replace her lost jade choker and reestablishing authority on Ship Street. She mends political fences by warning wavering allies and proposes that Hami lead a new Weather Man branch in Port Massy, requiring him to live jade-free. In a painful meeting with Maro, Shae’s secrecy and choices fracture their relationship to guarded friendship.
Summary
After twelve days in the hospital, Shae returns home, scarred and suffering muted jade withdrawal. She refuses Woon’s offer to replace her lost choker, choosing to bear the loss publicly as a mark of consequence. Woon recounts holding her post and his fraught confrontation with Hami over loyalty during her absence.
Back on Ship Street, staff salute Shae, affirming her integrity despite the duel’s outcome. Councilman Kowi and two Lantern Men visit to hedge after previously advocating her removal; Shae accepts their apologies but warns that her forgiveness will not extend to future disloyalty, reestablishing political control.
Shae summons Hami and, after acknowledging their disagreements, offers him a pivotal assignment: open a Weather Man branch in Port Massy. She promises resources and direct reporting but explains he must live without jade under Espenian law. Hami weighs the professional opportunity against withdrawal and identity loss and asks time to consult his family.
Later, Shae meets Maro at Jan Royal University. He confronts her for shutting him out before the duel and risking death without a word. Shae defends the necessity for clan honor but admits she can’t promise full openness. Recognizing incompatible values and secrecy, they reduce their relationship to strained friendship.
