Chapter Nineteen
Overview
Andrew returns manic, fixates on legacy, and pushes a fabricated relationship to please producers. Locked outside, he restrains Lily and self-injures hoping for rescue, but dawn brings only disillusion. A coerced kiss completes the task, banishing Andrew and leaving Lily alone with the key and the compound.
Summary
Andrew wakes Lily with manic cheer, proposing a "legacy" monument and a staged romance to please the producers. He assigns Lily housework and cooking while he builds an ever-growing trash monument, grows erratic, and fixates on how well producers cared for him during his illness. A task appears on the screen: Kiss the other resident for a key.
They maintain an awkward, performative closeness. One night, Andrew keeps vigil at the northern perimeter, convinced production is nearby. Returning to find the house locked, Lily suggests completing the kiss task so one can enter. Andrew refuses to let either leave.
Andrew handcuffs Lily outside with her jeweled reward cuffs to stop her from going, then injures himself to summon help, urging Lily to harm herself too. Lily refuses, sobbing in the freezing night as Andrew curls behind her for warmth, asking to pretend she is Candice while he strokes her hair. No one comes.
At dawn, Andrew realizes help isn’t coming. He unlocks Lily, then demands a kiss to trigger the task. Lily, trapped in his grip, kisses him and the system announces Andrew is banished. He gently instructs Lily to retrieve the key, rest, and later bring his things when she eventually leaves.
Andrew walks away into the desert. Lily, newly alone, sits on the step, stunned at the solitude she had once schemed to win but now fears.
