Chapter Twenty

Overview

Alone with unlimited rewards, Lily spirals from indulgence to shame and grief. A hollow call with her mother and a loving voice note from Sam force clarity about fame versus a real life. Rejecting the compound’s lure, she packs a sled and endures a night trek to the pickup point, where someone finally greets her.

Summary

Lily breaks into the empty house using improvised tools, then discovers the screen now grants any request if she thanks each brand. She indulges, ordering luxuries and supplies, storing them by the wheelbarrow and sleeping among her rewards, oscillating between satisfaction and unease.

Days blur into cocktails and consumer choices until the disembodied voice startles her, prompting shame and sobriety. Overwhelmed by endless options and loneliness, Lily fixates on famed past finalists Brittany and Donna, then collapses into days of grief.

A sleek phone appears. Lily calls her mother, who is detached and pragmatic, deflating Lily’s hopes for validation and fame. The call ends abruptly, intensifying Lily’s isolation and doubt about staying to chase notoriety.

Later, a voice note from Sam arrives. He describes post-show dislocation, new travels, missing Lily, and wanting another chance. His message rekindles Lily’s longing for real life beyond the compound and clarifies that staying for endless rewards equals emptiness.

Lily orders a sled, packs her and others’ mementos, discards the dead phone on Andrew’s monument, and begins a grueling night trek through the desert toward the unknown pickup point. Exhausted yet resolute, she finally hears her name called and sees a raised hand, signaling rescue.
