Summary
With Vanessa gone, the eight remaining residents thrive, stockpiling food and luxuries as Communal Tasks pay out generously. The shed becomes a trove of rewards. Lily, shy after her first night with Sam, is reassured when Sam admits he stayed for her and doesn’t care about winning; they imagine lasting together as their garden begins to sprout.
Life’s comforts swell, but Lily reflects on the addictive simplicity of Personal Tasks and how isolation intensifies attachment. Tom, newly attentive to his appearance, awkwardly tries to ingratiate himself with Becca, who rebuffs him and demands distance. Lily worries about Becca’s quiet bond with Sam but focuses on her new relationship.
Jacintha withdraws, confiding to Lily that she doesn’t like Carlos romantically and misses Marcus. She criticizes how rewards try to refashion her image and rejects the idea that the compound is home. Their friendship strains as Lily embraces the compound’s comforts.
Lily then receives a Personal Task to break another resident’s reward. In Tom’s trophy-like “gray room,” Tom catches her examining a bone from the “beast” and, boasting, reveals Personal Task details, triggering a rule-violation warning. After he flees, Lily quietly snaps the record player’s needle, silencing his prized music.
As evening falls, a lighthearted “first kiss” task for yogurt eases tension. Then a new task appears: banish a couple for a hot tub. While Lily hopes to expel Tom and Becca, Jacintha announces that she and Carlos will leave by choice. Despite Lily’s devastated pleas, they depart, exchanging practical gardening advice and quiet goodbyes.
Moments later, Tom’s punishment arrives: the hot tub overheats, scalding him as he screams and collapses, confirming the producers’ invisible control. The group renders first aid while Lily, unmoved to coddle Tom, tidies her things and absorbs the loss of Jacintha and Carlos against the backdrop of their newly won luxury.
