Chapter 48

Overview

Celaena defeats Grave decisively, but the victory is immediately undercut when Kaltain drugs her ceremonial wine before the final duel with Cain. Cain uses Celaena’s weakened state to brutalize her physically and psychologically, exposing knowledge of her parents’ deaths while Dorian and Chaol realize something is terribly wrong but cannot intervene.

The chapter shifts the final contest from a trial of skill into a rigged execution, with bloodbane opening Celaena to terrifying visions of the dead. Cain’s removal of the Eye of Elena leaves Celaena vulnerable at the chapter’s cliffhanger, raising the stakes from defeat and imprisonment to possible death or supernatural capture.

Summary

Celaena faces Grave first and quickly turns his aggression against him. Using Nehemia’s staff, Celaena breaks his rhythm, bloodies his nose, sweeps him off his feet, and pins the iron-tipped staff to his throat. Before leaving the ring, Celaena reveals her true name to Grave and mocks his insults by proving they have no power over her.

After Celaena’s victory, the king immediately orders wine for the winners. Kaltain serves goblets to Cain and Celaena under the guise of an offering to the Great Goddess, and Celaena drinks despite unease. Chaol quietly urges Celaena not to lose, and Celaena enters the ring against Cain with little time to recover.

The duel with Cain begins badly almost at once. Celaena’s vision blurs, nausea rises, and her body feels slow, making Cain’s strength and speed overwhelming. When Celaena briefly gains an advantage but cannot finish the blow, she notices Kaltain laughing and realizes the wine contained bloodbane, a drug that causes disorientation and hallucinations.

Cain knowingly exploits Celaena’s weakened state, battering her with sword, fists, and kicks while drawing out the fight. From Dorian’s and Chaol’s perspectives, it becomes clear that something is wrong, but neither can safely interfere without risking Cain being declared the victor. Cain then unnerves Celaena further by speaking about her parents’ deaths and her childhood trauma, revealing knowledge he should not possess.

As the bloodbane takes hold, Celaena begins seeing dead, demonic creatures beyond the veil of the world. Chaol kneels at the ring’s edge and urges Celaena to get up, giving her enough hope to try despite her pain. Cain hurls Celaena into the clock tower again, and the visions intensify into an army of monsters trying to drag her away.

Celaena briefly strikes through a vision and glimpses Cain again, but Cain grabs at her throat and instead tears the Eye of Elena amulet from Celaena’s neck. With the amulet broken from her, sunlight vanishes from Celaena’s perception, the bloodbane fully overwhelms her senses, and the dead advance on her.
