Chapter 54

Overview

Chaol visits Celaena after her breakup with Dorian, still burdened by guilt over killing Cain, and finds comfort in Celaena’s resilience. Their shared toast to her four years until freedom strengthens their connection and hints that Chaol’s feelings for Celaena are growing.

In a dream, Elena reframes Celaena’s victory as part of a larger destiny, revealing that Celaena is needed at the king’s side to see what must be done. Elena’s warning that many people are crying out for help shifts Celaena’s role from survivor seeking freedom toward someone who may be called to save others.

Summary

Several hours after Celaena ends her relationship with Dorian, Chaol returns to Celaena’s rooms while looking for the prince. Chaol is still shaken by killing Cain in the duel; Cain’s death has not been discussed by the king, but Chaol remains haunted by the act and by the blood on his sword.

Chaol finds Celaena eating alone and asks where Dorian is. Celaena says Dorian will not be visiting because Celaena ended the relationship, explaining that a romance between the King’s Champion and a prince would be inappropriate. Chaol is pleased by the decision, though Chaol’s response also reflects his own unspoken interest in Celaena.

Celaena invites Chaol to join her in celebrating her new position and the four years that stand between her and freedom. Chaol accepts, and the two share wine. The moment eases Chaol’s guilt and suggests a deepening bond between Chaol and Celaena.

Later, in a dream, Celaena stands in the royal tomb with Elena. The tomb is peaceful rather than threatening, and Elena appears without armor. Elena reveals that history has diminished Elena’s role: Elena fought in the demon wars against Erawan beside Gavin, rather than merely waiting as a helpless princess.

Elena tells Celaena that Celaena could become greater than Elena and could “rattle the stars” if Celaena dared to accept that power. Celaena insists she became the King’s Champion only for freedom, but Elena says Celaena answered a deeper need and that many people, including Celaena’s friends and Nehemia, need Celaena where Celaena is.

Elena marks Celaena’s forehead again and explains that when Celaena is ready to hear the cries of those who need saving, Celaena will understand why Elena came to her. Elena says Celaena’s place near the king will let Celaena see what must be done. Before leaving, Celaena thanks Elena for saving Celaena’s life, and Elena answers that blood ties cannot be broken.
