Chapter 1

Overview

Celaena Sardothien, Adarlan’s most notorious assassin, is taken from slavery in Endovier by Chaol Westfall, Captain of the Royal Guard. Though shackled and guarded, she remains observant, defiant, and dangerous, revealing both the trauma of her imprisonment and her refusal to be broken.

The chapter shifts Celaena from the mines into direct contact with the royal court, ending with the revelation that she has been brought before the Crown Prince of Adarlan. This meeting signals that her fate may change, though whether toward freedom, punishment, or another royal scheme remains uncertain.

Summary

After a year enslaved in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena Sardothien is taken from the mines in shackles under unusually heavy guard. A hooded man in black grips her arm and leads her through the officials’ building, deliberately taking a confusing route. Celaena recognizes the tactic and silently tracks the layout instead of being disoriented.

The hooded escort identifies himself as Chaol Westfall, Captain of the Royal Guard. His presence unsettles Celaena because it suggests royal interest in her fate, but she hides her fear behind mockery and defiance. She studies Chaol’s weapon, notes the royal insignia on his clothing, and considers whether she could attack him and the guards despite her shackles.

As Celaena is marched through the building, she hears the other prisoners returning from labor and reflects on Endovier’s brutality. The mines hold criminals, conquered people, suspected magic users, and rebels, especially from Eyllwe. Celaena remembers being betrayed and captured, and briefly wonders whether death might have been easier than survival in the mines.

Chaol brings Celaena to red-and-gold glass doors guarded by soldiers. Celaena resists, fearing she is being taken to her execution, but Chaol only tells her she will learn the reason soon enough. Inside, she enters a lavish throne room whose wealth contrasts sharply with the misery of the mines.

More royal guards appear, revealing the seriousness of the meeting. Celaena faces the room and sees a handsome young man seated on a throne. As everyone bows, she realizes she has been brought before the Crown Prince of Adarlan.
