Chapter 11

Overview

Celaena begins her first competition training session still exhausted from reading Dorian’s books late into the night, revealing both her hunger for freedom of mind and her willingness to test boundaries. In the barracks, Cain’s taunts sharpen her desire to defeat him, while Chaol pushes her to channel rage into performance rather than reckless violence.

Her sparring match with Chaol proves she remains dangerous and highly skilled despite Endovier, but his victory by tripping her exposes a weakness: talent alone will not be enough. The chapter shifts the contest from abstract threat to active preparation, establishing Celaena’s key challenge as discipline under pressure.

Summary

Chaol wakes Celaena at dawn for the first day of the competition, ignoring her complaints about cold, exhaustion, and lack of sleep. At breakfast, Celaena reveals that she stayed up until four reading books Dorian sent from his personal library after she wrote to him for permission to borrow them. Chaol disapproves of her familiarity with the Crown Prince, but Celaena needles him and reminds him that Dorian chose her as his Champion.

Because the day’s tests are not announced in advance, Chaol orders a servant to dress Celaena in practical pants, a loose shirt, and a cloak. Celaena complains about the outfit, but Chaol hurries her through the castle to the barracks, where the Champions are already training under supervision. The sparring hall is heavily guarded and filled with weapons, giving Celaena both temptation and a clear warning that any escape attempt would be met with force.

Celaena assesses the other Champions and notices that many seem competent with weapons. Cain enters with his trainer and guards, openly leers at Celaena, and taunts her by suggesting she should have fled. Celaena is furious and wants to kill Cain immediately, but Chaol steps in and tells her to save her strength for the competition and defeat Cain properly.

Chaol challenges Celaena to prove her skill. Celaena chooses a rapier and provokes him by pretending she might have forgotten swordsmanship after Endovier. When Chaol attacks, Celaena easily blocks and parries, rediscovering the rhythm of swordplay despite her weakened body. Chaol recognizes her talent, while Celaena privately notes that he is skilled and strong, though not as quick as she is.

The sparring match intensifies until Chaol suddenly trips Celaena and sends her crashing to the floor, then points his sword at her heart. Celaena argues that tripping is not true victory, but Chaol insists he won because he holds the advantage. Cain watches and grins, angering Celaena further. Chaol tells Celaena that she has the skills but lacks discipline, then orders her to choose another weapon. Celaena selects hunting knives with renewed confidence and anticipation.
