Chapter 37
Overview
Celaena attends the Yulemas service under Chaol’s watch, bored and exhausted after recent suspicions and tensions. The religious procession unexpectedly singles her out with Deanna’s blessing, giving her a symbolic connection to the hunt and protection.
The chapter pauses the murder mystery and competition to deepen Celaena and Chaol’s rapport, while the public blessing hints at forces or meanings beyond court politics.
Summary
Celaena attends the Yulemas temple service seated near the back with Chaol, keeping her mouth shut because her teeth are still red. The glass temple, built after the King of Adarlan destroyed the original stone one, is filled with nobles, guards, and court figures including Dorian, the queen, Duke Perrington, Kaltain, and Nehemia.
The High Priestess begins the ceremony by recounting the birth of Lumas and the banishing of chaos from the Gates of the Wyrd. Celaena, exhausted from waking early and from her tense encounter with Nehemia, quickly loses interest and falls asleep during the service.
Chaol wakes Celaena after the sermon and songs have ended, annoyed because Celaena had drooled on his shoulder. Their whispered bickering shows an easy familiarity, though Chaol insists Celaena pay attention as the procession of the gods begins.
Blindfolded children dressed as the gods move through the congregation, each bearing a symbolic gift. Farnor, God of War, gives a miniature silver sword to Duke Perrington, while Lumas passes Celaena by. Then the child representing Deanna, Goddess of the Hunt and Protector of the Young, stops before Celaena.
The girl blesses Celaena and gives her a solid-gold arrow as Deanna’s token. Celaena immediately thinks of its resale value and offers it to Chaol, assuming she will not be permitted to keep it, but Chaol returns it and says he does not want to test the gods. Celaena notices that something in Chaol’s expression seems changed, and she responds with a grin.
