Chapter 36

Overview

Celaena keeps Nehemia’s suspicious behavior secret while the competition narrows to five Champions and the final trials approach. On Yulemas, Dorian’s gifts of candy and a frightened puppy reveal his affection and kindness, prompting Celaena to respond with unexpected warmth.

The festive calm turns tense when Celaena realizes Nehemia will attend the ball and might, if guilty, use it to attack Adarlan’s elite. Unable to warn Chaol without exposing her suspicions, Celaena decides to defy orders and secretly attend the ball to protect Dorian and Chaol.

Summary

Several days pass after Celaena discovers Nehemia’s hidden knowledge of Wyrdmarks. Celaena tells no one because confronting Nehemia without stronger proof could destroy their friendship and Nehemia’s diplomatic position. Instead, Celaena spends her spare time researching the marks, continues intense training, and survives another Test, leaving five Champions before the final Test and duel.

On Yulemas morning, Celaena tries to set aside fear about Nehemia, the murders, and the competition. She wakes to find a large anonymous bag of candy and gleefully eats much of it, staining her teeth red and making a mess. Philippa scolds Celaena but also warmly wishes her a happy Yulemas, and Celaena is moved when Philippa calls her by her real name.

Dorian arrives with more gifts and reveals that the candy came from Dorian. Dorian also gives Celaena a frightened golden-haired puppy, explaining that the dog seemed calmer around Celaena and might learn to trust humans with her. Celaena accepts the puppy, insists the dog be trained properly, and thanks Dorian with a kiss on the cheek, leaving Dorian flustered.

After Dorian leaves, Celaena realizes Nehemia will attend the Yulemas ball. Because Nehemia may be connected to the Wyrdmarks, the Champion murders, and the deaths of her people in Eyllwe, Celaena fears Nehemia might use the ball to strike at Adarlan’s royals. Celaena cannot warn Chaol without risking Nehemia’s mission and their friendship, so she decides to secretly infiltrate the ball despite being forbidden to attend.

Later, Celaena walks with Chaol to the Yulemas temple service. Chaol teases her about her red teeth and her exclusion from the ball, unaware that Philippa has already promised to help Celaena obtain a gown and mask. Celaena reflects on her shifting feelings toward Chaol and accepts that he will likely recognize and punish her, but her fear for Chaol and Dorian makes the risk worthwhile.
