Section II - The Prairie Witch (2)

Overview

Sheriff Vick Iscoe forces the Antidote to take an unprecedented deposit of his own memories, revealing he murdered and buried Mink Petrusev to protect his reelection and that he framed Clemson Louis Dew as the Lucky Rabbit's Foot Killer by planting evidence on unrelated victims, including Asphodel's mother Lada. Unable to trance, the Antidote relives the crime as Vick and awakens fully to her decades of complicity, naming herself his accomplice and a Monster.

Summary

At 2 a.m., Sheriff Vick Iscoe arrives at the Antidote's office with his terrified new deputy, Percy Gander. Vick forces Percy to deposit his memories of the night into the Antidote's earhorn so he won't talk, then unprecedentedly demands the Antidote take his own deposit too, promising to withdraw it after the election. The Antidote, unable to enter her usual trance because her vault is too full, experiences Vick's memory from inside him.

In Vick's deposit, he and Percy transport the body of Mink Petrusev, a Russian widow Percy discovered murdered near a poultry farm. Vick refuses to investigate or call the coroner, fearing the murder will undermine his reelection campaign against Ernie Whitson and expose that Clemson Louis Dew, awaiting a second execution as the Lucky Rabbit's Foot Killer, was framed. Vick reveals he planted rabbit's feet on prior victims to manufacture a serial killer narrative and close multiple unsolved cases at once.

Vick and Percy drive Mink's body miles into the dunes. Vick smashes her skull with a shovel and burns her in a pit. Hallucinating, Vick sees the ghosts of all the women whose murders he covered up—Enesta, Luz, Lada, Nina, Olga, Allene, Minnie—and a vision of Clemson on a flaming throne. He also recalls how he added Lada Oletsky's unrelated murder to Dew's tally as a favor to another lawman.

Walking back, Vick and Percy spot a group of girls partying near the road, including Lada Oletsky's daughter (Asphodel), a Mexican girl, and a Black girl. The implication of menace hangs in the air, with Percy's hint that they should be "escorted home" met by Vick's chilling reply.

The deposit ends. Vick, euphoric from unburdening himself, attempts to assault the Antidote, who fends him off using menstrual blood. Alone, the Antidote realizes she now bears the full memory of Mink's murder and Vick's many crimes—including the framing of Dew and the cover-up of Asphodel's mother's killing. She recognizes herself as Vick's longtime accomplice and names herself a Monster newly awake to her complicity.
