Summary

Asphodel drives the Dangers home from their championship win, haunted by guilt over recklessly steering the bus into the dust storm and feeling distanced from her teammates. Returning to her uncle's farm, she is stunned to find the Antidote and Cleo Allfrey at the kitchen table playing rummy with Harp, who has welcomed both women onto his land—Cleo developing photographs in the root cellar, the Antidote hiding after a violent night with Sheriff Iscoe.

Harp embraces Dell with surprising warmth, and the four share cream of potato soup. Later, washing dishes together, Harp asks Dell to quit working for the Antidote, expressing confidence that his land is mysteriously protected from storms and the Sheriff. Dell quietly tells him she might already be a witch; he answers that if so, she should not be that kind.

Upstairs, the Antidote tells Dell she has quit being a Vault and fires her, then reveals everything Sheriff Iscoe deposited the night before: there is no Lucky Rabbit's Foot Killer—the Sheriff fabricated the murders, including killing Mink Petrusev. Dell records the truth, including Mink's name.

Searching her mother Lada's old room for any keepsake, Dell finds her grandfather Tomasz's hidden pill box containing a deposit slip in purple ink. Harp catches her, recognizes his father's initials, and the Antidote identifies the slip as belonging to the Counselor of Genoa, a prairie witch his father secretly visited. Harp had unknowingly accompanied his father there as a child and made his own deposit, which Tomasz destroyed.

Harp prepares to drive to Genoa immediately to find the Counselor and recover his father's buried memories, hoping they may also concern Lada. Dell begs to come, but Harp refuses, and the Antidote restrains her, insisting this inheritance belongs to him. Harp departs into the night, gesturing at the inexplicably clear skies over his protected fields, hoping the deposit holds answers.
