Section III - Asphodel Oletsky (3)

Overview

As the mob attacks Antonina, Asphodel and the Dangers rush the stage and use their identities as the town's daughters to shame and break up the assailants, allowing Antonina to escape. Asphodel draws pursuers away in a desperate flight outside, but is captured by Red Iscoe, leaving her in immediate peril.

Summary

Asphodel realizes the enraged crowd at the Grange Hall intends to kill them. The mob, demanding their deposits back and accusing the Antidote (Antonina) of theft, surges the stage. Ellda's father is the first to strike Antonina, and Asphodel tries to wedge between them.

The other Dangers—Ellda, Nell, Pazi, Valeria, Thelma, and Dagmara—rush in from all sides, breaking up the cluster of men with their bodies. Their presence shames some attackers, who recognize the faces of local daughters and lower their arms. In the chaos, Antonina mouths a thank-you to Asphodel and slips offstage between Valeria and Pazi, escaping.

Asphodel deliberately runs in the opposite direction to draw the men away, the Dangers fanning out and weaving together to lead pursuers toward the open doors. Cleo Allfrey is already outside, sprinting across the lot away from the truck, with dozens of cursing townspeople pouring out behind them.

Resigned but determined, Asphodel keeps running, anticipating stones and bullets. Suddenly someone seizes her, pinning her arms behind her back. She recognizes Red Iscoe's voice as he shouts to his brother that he has caught her, leaving her fate hanging in the balance.
