Section III - The Scarecrow (2)
Overview
Summary
The Scarecrow, long emptied of identity and stripped of memory, experiences a sudden flood of returning recollections as the storm rages around him. Memories rise on the horizon like a gathering presence, and hail across the prairie becomes a fractured mirror reflecting scenes from his lost life.
He recalls his brothers wrestling in snow behind a church, the purple lampshade in Grandma Alba's house that meant safety, a prairie dog town shared with his sister, his father teaching him to drive, his July wedding to Sara, and watching a meteor shower with her over Valentine. He sees his own infant face mirrored in his mother's eyes, recognizing that he once had an extraordinary, ordinary life.
As awareness returns, he sees a woman crossing the fallowland toward him, carrying something resembling a large green metal teardrop. Before she reaches him, he senses a door opening, suggesting reunion, restoration, or the imminent reclaiming of his stolen self.
