Section II - The Player-Captain Of The Dangers, Asphodel Oletsky (2)

Overview

Dell drives the Dangers through a deadly dust storm to Red Willow, where she leads them to a brutal Region 7 championship victory by deliberately injuring the opposing captain, only to learn the cost of her ruthlessness. At the celebratory bonfire, Ellda reveals she performed sexual favors on Pastor Robbins to secure the team bus, and Dell is forced to reckon with what winning has required. The night ends with Dell and Valeria becoming intimate, and Dell confiding she is the Antidote's apprentice.

Summary

Asphodel "Dell" Oletsky narrates driving the Dangers' bus, the Pegasus, through a violent dust storm en route to Red Willow for the Region 7 championship game. After surviving the storm and digging out the bus, the seven teammates check into the Princess and the Pea motor lodge alone, eat at a diner, and gawk at electric streetlights and well-dressed mannequins. Dell pays with money earned working for the Antidote, planning to save enough to leave her uncle's house.

On game day, the Dangers face the much larger Perkins Steelwool Princesses, led by towering captain Oramelle. Dell delivers an angry, vengeful pep talk and instructs her team to play dirty, knowing the lenient referee will not call fouls. Dell deliberately injures Oramelle's knee. The Dangers crush the Princesses 44-10 to become Region 7 champions, but afterward Dell learns from a Princess that Oramelle cleans houses for a living and may lose her job if she's casted, and that the scorekeeper had wanted to cancel the game. Dell feels sick with guilt amid the Princesses' loving families.

That night, around a bonfire, the Dangers toast their victory and Ellda, who they reveal performed oral sex on married Pastor Robbins to secure the bus. Dell is horrified but Valeria confronts her: Dell wanted the win more than she wanted to know its cost. Dell sneaks into the cottonwoods with Valeria, where they kiss and become physically intimate.

During their encounter, Dell freezes, overwhelmed by memories of her murdered mother. Valeria comforts her and they share stories of their mothers. Dell confides her secret: she is the Antidote's apprentice, training to be a prairie witch. Valeria urges Dell to stay present in her body, and they retreat into the lodge together, Dell describing her mother as beautiful.
