Chapter 3
Overview
Diem arrives at the palace and instinctively summons the gryvern Sorae, forging an immediate, visible bond that asserts her authority. Inside, Diem rejects Luther’s guidance, while he warns her to conceal her plans and heritage. The encounter sets public stakes and propels Diem toward confronting the royal family.
Summary
Diem dismounts at the palace, repulsed by Luther and focused on the empty gryvern perch. Feeling a pull between the Crown and the beast, she calls Sorae with newfound authority. Sorae answers, landing in a dramatic display that draws the royal household’s attention and signals Diem’s claim.
Diem approaches without fear, affirming a soul-deep bond as Sorae nuzzles and growls a warning at Luther and the guards. The public deference of the guards and Sorae’s protective stance confirm Diem’s emergent power and the danger to anyone who threatens her.
Inside, Diem exchanges barbs with Luther, who cautions that gryverns can act on perceived threats and might kill to please their Crown. Diem refuses his counsel and a delay, choosing an immediate confrontation with the assembled family rather than private introductions or preparation.
At the audience chamber doors, Luther momentarily softens, acknowledging his debt for Lily’s life and offering crucial advice: reveal as little as possible about herself, her plans, her magic, and especially her mother. He opens the doors with intertwined light and shadow, and Diem steps forward to claim her throne and face the royal family.
