Chapter 38

Diem’s friends dress her in regal finery to bolster morale before the Challenging. They head to the dungeons for a final training session, where Luther unexpectedly awaits. He returns the Sword of Corbois to his person and reaffirms loyalty, while Diem admits past secrecy; they agree to full honesty after the Challenging. A letter from Henri arrives, reminding Diem of unresolved feelings and obligations.

Luther reveals he bargained with House Hanoverre: if he marries Iléana, they will not pursue Diem. Diem rejects the sacrifice and pleads for trust in her survival. Luther insists on proof of her magic; if she can defend herself, he will refuse the bargain.

During training, Alixe explains shielding as releasing raw magic without shaping it. Diem initially struggles, then, spurred by her resolve to protect Luther from Iléana, asks for his help. Through a charged, focused exercise, Diem centers her power and manifests a shimmering dome that withstands attacks from Alixe and Taran. Luther confirms the shield is entirely Diem’s doing.

Buoyed by success, Diem teases Luther into honoring his word; he agrees to decline Hanoverre’s demand. Diem formally appoints Alixe as an advisor to her council. The group heads to lunch, their bond strengthened. Diem notes a bonded bargain with Remis means any Corbois who Challenges her will cost Remis his magic.

As the others eat, Luther offers help with Diem’s “unfinished business.” Diem declines, keeping the night for a private meeting implied by Henri’s letter, determined to settle it before the Challenging.
