Diem, who abandoned the numbing flameroot that once suppressed her visions, collapses outside her home as a luminous Crown hovers over her, implying the King’s death and her selection as Queen. Teller insists the Crown is real, but Diem, panicked, searches the sea to recover discarded flameroot, hoping to end the hallucination.

Lily arrives, sees the Crown, and swears fealty, forcing Diem to confront the reality. Discussion raises doubts about Diem’s mortality: her strength, rare injuries, and grey eyes suggest a mysterious lineage. Diem forbids Lily from alerting Prince Luther, recalling their hostile, fraught encounter and his certainty she holds power.

Teller explains the Rite of Coronation on Coeurîle and the 30‑day Period of Challenging, where any Challenger must duel to the death. Diem hopes to yield the Crown but learns surrender means mortal combat, heightening the stakes for her safety, her estranged father, her missing mother, and her ties to the anti-royal Guardians.

Choosing secrecy and action, Diem instructs Teller to tell others she’s away and to research the Crown, the Rite, and the Challenging. Lily proposes a secluded royal hunting cabin, now technically Diem’s property.
