Chapter 9

Overview

Diem, emptied by last night’s magic, meets Luther privately. She admits her mortal engagement, and Luther announces the King’s funeral and offers to manage Aemonn. Pressed about Auralie, Luther reveals Auralie was spying with his help and traveled to a forbidden place. He refuses to break his promise but vows to bring Auralie back by year’s end.

Summary

After unleashing immense magic in the dungeon, Diem awakens numb and depleted. Luther arrives with a private breakfast, explaining he burned out his reserves holding the palace together. He updates her: the King’s death has been announced; the funeral is imminent; expectations will rise toward the Ascension Ball. Diem admits Aemonn asked to escort her and, flustered, she revealed her mortal engagement.

Luther promises to handle Aemonn and asks about the fiancé’s knowledge of the Crown. When Diem doubts whether Henri will accept her as Descended, Luther counters that she has always been Descended. Their talk shifts to the Challenging and legitimacy of her reign, with Luther stressing she is Queen regardless, though support is vital to enact her plans.

Diem demands news of her mother. Luther insists on hearing what Diem knows, then reluctantly reveals pieces he can share without breaking promises. He confirms there was no true bargain with the King about Teller’s schooling; it was a cover that only Luther knew. He caught Auralie spying months earlier, then chose to help her because of a mutual goal.

Luther explains that on the day Diem saw them arguing, Auralie asked him to get her into a mortal-forbidden place. He refuses to name the location, citing an unbreakable promise. Diem pleads, but he remains resolute, offering to accept any punishment rather than betray his word.

Recognizing she relies on Luther’s promises to protect her mortals, Diem restrains her anger. As he departs, Luther offers one concession: if Auralie does not return by year’s end, he will go and bring her back himself. Diem seizes on that hope, calculating survival through the Challenging and coronation.
