Chapter 6

Moiraine confronts Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne after a fraught night, reasserting control over the imprisoned Black Ajah sisters Joiya and Amico. She orders them transferred to Tar Valon in four days under heavy guard and warns she will listen only to genuinely new information. The tension exposes Elayne’s distress over Berelain being found in Rand’s chambers.

Moiraine reports that "bubbles of evil" erupted, nearly killing Rand; she Healed him and believes Perrin and Mat suffered similar attacks without injury. She insists Rand must act before enemies and nobles interpret inaction as weakness. Her strategy is to lead Tear against Illian and confront Sammael, both to unify Tairen and Illianer support and to caution the Forsaken, buying Rand time to learn control.

She cites a Kandori translation of the Prophecies, which Rand has begun studying, and fears his independent interpretations will endanger him. When pressed on contingencies, Moiraine reveals a redstone doorframe ter’angreal in the Stone’s Great Holding that grants three true answers but has strict rules and dire risks, especially for questions touching the Shadow. She explains its Mayener origin and how Tear acquired it.

Moiraine advises the Accepted to prioritize Tanchico over Joiya’s claim about freeing Mazrim Taim, noting she has already sent multiple warnings to the Tower. With Moiraine gone, Egwene tells Elayne she loves Rand only as a brother and steps aside. Elayne, despite fears of her mother’s judgment and Berelain’s designs, resolves to declare her feelings to Rand while affirming her duty to continue the Black Ajah hunt.
