Chapter 28
Overview
Perrin splits camp near the Manetheren Waygate, then enters the wolf dream to scout threats. He chases the killer called Slayer to the Tower of Ghenjei, where Hopper warns that death in the dream is final. A mysterious woman cautions him about the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. Perrin learns wolves have fled or died in the Two Rivers, confirming rising peril at home.
Summary
Perrin’s group camps in two circles near the Manetheren Waygate at Faile’s insistence. Perrin and Gaul keep a close camp, wary of ravens seen earlier. They speak of the Threefold Land and Manetheren, and Gaul shrugs off Perrin’s golden eyes as unimportant amid greater changes. Perrin lies down resolved to enter the wolf dream for answers.
In the wolf dream, Perrin appears by the Waygate and briefly sees shifting visionary “windows”: Rand amid storms, Nynaeve and Elayne hunting in a twisted city, Mat choosing a path and gaining a hat and bladed staff, and Egwene with a white-haired woman as the White Tower crumbles. He tests newfound control, stepping great distances, but senses no wolves.
In the Sand Hills, Perrin spots a cold-smelling man skinning a wolf. The man bolts, and Perrin pursues across vast terrain to a gleaming metal tower. The trail ends at the Tower of Ghenjei. Hopper arrives, naming the killer “Slayer,” warning that Slayer is present in the flesh and can kill in the dream, where death is final.
A golden-haired, braid-wearing woman appears to Perrin, unseen by Hopper. She warns that the Tower is a doorway to the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, recalls the “Snakes and Foxes” rhyme, and urges Perrin to avoid the tower and the World of Dreams, calling Slayer’s evil ancient. She vanishes as mysteriously as she came.
Perrin explains his mission to find wolves near the Two Rivers. Hopper tells him to avoid his homeland: wolves there have fled or been killed and Slayer haunts the dream. Perrin wakes after a short sleep, tells Gaul things may be worse than feared, and broods on the linked threats of Shadowspawn, ravens, and Slayer centered on the Two Rivers.
