Chapter 41

Perrin’s survivors follow music to a Tuatha’an encampment. Gaul, Bain, and Chiad refuse to stay among the “Lost Ones,” leaving to camp apart. The Tinkers, wary yet compassionate, welcome the wounded. Perrin recognizes Raen and Ila, recalling past ties, and warns them Trollocs are nearby, urging them toward Emond’s Field for safety. Raen declines, holding to the Way of the Leaf and constant travel.

Ila brings Perrin into Raen’s wagon and examines a deeply set, barbed Trolloc arrow. She deems removal too risky here, applying poultice and bandages and advising rest until a healer in Emond’s Field can help. Ihvon counsels perspective, while Faile defends Perrin’s leadership and argues that without him the men would have scattered.

Aram intrudes, smiling and judgmental about Perrin’s wolfish eyes and Elyas, then leaves when rebuffed. Ila departs, and Faile tends Perrin, urging him to lead the living rather than drown in guilt for the twenty-seven dead. She cites lessons from her father about command and responsibility.

Pressed about her background, Faile discloses she is Davram Bashere’s daughter, explains her brothers’ deaths, and why she fled duties to become a Hunter of the Horn. In turn, Perrin reveals his bond with wolves, heightened senses, the wolf dream, and the danger of losing his humanity. Faile accepts him without hesitation, even teasing that her mother would approve of a “wolf king.”

Finally, Faile slips Ila’s pain powder into Perrin’s drink, urging rest. As the Tinkers prepare to move on and the party plans to reach Emond’s Field for proper treatment, Perrin drifts to sleep under Faile’s murmured reassurance.
