Chapter 45

Perrin rushes to the south defenses and halts men from loosing on brightly clad figures, revealing them as Tuatha'an, not Trollocs. He orders the barricade opened and personally reassures the frightened Tinkers. Ila and Raen arrive bruised and stunned, reporting their caravan destroyed overnight; the Children killed their dogs, and many kin died.

While the women of Emond’s Field take in the survivors, Perrin turns to village needs. He institutes a warning bugle and scouting plans with Warders and hunters, settles craftsmen disputes, and directs water and fletching work. Despite his reluctance, people increasingly defer to him. Luc rides in boasting a Myrddraal’s head, subtly belittling Perrin’s ‘beginner’s luck.’

In the inn, Faile teases Perrin about unintended leadership and speaks of nations and lords. Aram, shaken by his mother’s death, fixates on the weapons. He takes a sword from a barrel, prompting Ila’s horrified pleas to keep the Way of the Leaf. Perrin, moved by Aram’s grief and right to self-defense, sends him to Tam al’Thor for training. Ila declares Aram “Lost” and condemns Perrin’s wolf heart.

Whitecloaks arrive from the north led by Dain Bornhald, with Jaret Byar. Bornhald, reeking of drink and hatred, tries to arrest Perrin as a Darkfriend and claims his father died at Falme by Aes Sedai treachery. He reports Taren Ferry nearly destroyed. Luc pointedly asks about Ordeith; Bornhald snaps and offers no answer. Tension spikes as Two Rivers folk bristle and Whitecloaks form a line.

Perrin averts bloodshed by proposing a truce until the Trolloc threat is ended. Bran sets terms: no arrests, no entering homes without leave, no troublemaking, and shared defense. Bornhald grudgingly agrees. As the Children ride in, Luc warns Perrin about taking enemies close, and Faile fears for Perrin’s safety. Perrin resolves to accept guards, prioritizing unity against the Shadow.
