Chapter 11
Overview
Egwene enters Tel'aran'rhiod without the stone ring, targeting Tanchico’s Panarch’s Palace to scout for the Black Ajah. She surveys dangerous artifacts, senses the city’s decay, and is repeatedly tugged to the Aiel Waste. There she meets Wise One Amys, who detects a powerful evil in Tanchico and commands Egwene to come to Cold Rocks Hold to learn dreamwalking.
Summary
Egwene decides to enter Tel'aran'rhiod without the stone ring, while Elayne, Nynaeve, and Aviendha stand watch. Aiming for Tanchico, she studies a book’s engraving of the Panarch’s Palace museum to fix her destination and limits her time by a candle mark.
Arriving in the museum gallery, she inspects ancient exhibits: a warm-feeling angreal, sinister black collar and bracelets, and a broken white statue with a crystal sphere that painfully surges the Power when touched, then resets itself. She exits into the palace and city, finding Tanchico bright yet crumbling, sparsely populated by animals and the occasional fleeting dreamer.
Drawn off course twice into the Aiel Waste, Egwene startles an Aiel hunt and narrowly avoids a dangerous boar-like beast. She tests control over appearances with a pale-haired Aiel woman, then forces herself back to Tanchico, resuming a frantic search. Realizing flying exposes her to enemies, she lowers her profile but continues sweeping the city from street level.
An imposing, white-haired woman confronts her—Amys, a Wise One and practiced dreamwalker. Amys rebukes Egwene’s recklessness, confirms Tanchico is steeped in a darkness beyond ordinary evil, and warns she lacks the training to hunt the Black Ajah safely in Tel'aran'rhiod. Amys instructs Egwene to come to Cold Rocks Hold in the Threefold Land for teaching, then Egwene is abruptly pulled from the dream as her time ends.
