Overview

Isla and Oro traverse Sun Isle’s desert, their fraught attraction resurfacing as he heals her at an oasis. At dawn they enter Horus’s tomb, retrieve a god-bone and the missing page on closing portals, and confirm Horus is dead. While a storm rages, Isla steals the bone and escapes alone by shaping a trapped storm, racing back to Nightshade to enact her plan against Lark.

Summary

Isla, recalling intense intimacy with Oro, wakes in a cave beside him after the sandstorm clears. Determined to suppress her feelings and focus on stopping Lark, she follows Oro across the desert as dehydration overwhelms her. At an oasis, Oro carries Isla into the water and gently heals her burns, reigniting their unresolved desire despite Isla insisting they are enemies.

Traveling through the night, they reach a monumental cliff-palace that Oro identifies as a tomb. He waits for dawn, when a narrow beam of winter light reveals a hidden path. Guided inside, Isla uses the prophet’s tooth to locate a faded page detailing how to open and close portals.

With time running out as the light fades, Isla blood-smears her hands and forces open a shademade coffin. Inside lies Horus Rey’s preserved body clutching a glowing bone. At Isla’s urging, Oro removes the relic; Horus instantly decays to bones and ash, proving the bone’s preserving power. They reseal the tomb as darkness returns.

A new sandstorm seals them in place. Exhausted, Oro dozes at the entrance, his hand half-reaching for Isla. Seizing the moment, Isla tenderly brushes his arm, then takes the god-bone and slips into the storm, believing Oro would oppose her plan.

Outside, Isla breaks her storm-ring and, using Skyling power, hollows the unleashed tempest into a safe tunnel. She rides the vortex across the desert toward the gates and Nightshade, clutching the bone and the page that can close portals. Despite heat and fatigue, she keeps control, resolved to banish Lark—even if it means betraying Oro.
