Overview
Isla confides the fatal prophecy to Azul, seeking accountability as nexus makes any ruler’s death catastrophic. Azul foresees a reckoning storm and arms Isla with a stormfinch and a storm-trapping ring to locate the Nightshade portal. Afterward, Isla recovers Aurora’s secret feather, whose unsettling, blade-sharp tip hints at hidden power.
Summary
Isla meets Azul after news of her marriage to Grim spreads. Azul challenges her choice, warning Grim will invade again. Seeking accountability, Isla reveals the oracle’s prophecy that forces a lethal choice, noting nexus would doom thousands if a ruler dies. Azul listens and asks her to avoid heart-led mistakes.
Turning to the worsening tempests, Isla discloses the portal on Nightshade that is spawning storms. Azul shares Skyling omens of a coming reckoning, a storm beyond any known. To help, he gifts a stormfinch that sings before tempests and a ring containing a shred of storm; breaking it at altitude will release the storm and draw it toward its source, guiding Isla to the portal.
Azul returns Isla’s diamond ring, now imbued with a malleable fragment of power, and insists she is not a monster, recalling he sensed Aurora’s wrongness early. Isla intends to tell Grim but instead portals to the Wildling newland to retrieve Aurora’s kept secret: a white feather.
In her former room, Isla examines the feather. Its barbs ripple unnaturally and its tip cuts her finger like a blade. She tests it as a quill—writing “Isla” yields nothing. Frustrated, she considers destroying it, remembering Aurora’s betrayal and the prophet-follower’s warning of a current Wildling traitor.
