Skyres

Isla follows Aurora’s instructions to create a skyre: she pierces a family ruby with Aurora’s feather to make shimmering ink, then carves the symbol into her arm. The process is excruciating, but the marking fuses to her skin and successfully channels her power, letting her fire a precise, controlled blast.

When she asks Aurora (through the feather) for more markings, Aurora admits she knows none but hints where Isla can learn. Determined to secure safeguards beyond her island visits, Isla seeks Grim in the greenhouse.

There, Isla and Grim reflect on how their love began in hatred. Grim reveals his loveless training, his father’s cruelty, and Nightshade’s lineage: Cronan and successive rulers raised many children only to cull them, with Grim spared solely by his flair. He swears never to continue those practices, and Isla comforts him.

Isla decides to stop hiding, showing her bare wrists, and resolves to work with Grim. Wanting time together—and an excuse to follow Aurora’s lead—she agrees to visit another palace with him. She dons her wedding dress and formally recommits, asking to “try again” as his wife.

They return to their chamber, and, echoing their wedding night, they consummate their renewed commitment, deepening trust and unity before their urgent quest to find the portal and more skyre knowledge.
