5: Interview
Overview
Summary
This chapter shifts to a first-person interview perspective from Zelu's father, who reflects on his role as a storyteller in his children's lives. He describes gathering them in the living room near his ikenga, or outside under full moons, banning cell phones during these sessions. While his other children complained, Zelu was always eager, drinking in stories with the same enthusiasm he had as a child.
He recounts his favorite story: working on a fishing trawler as a University of Port Harcourt student. Despite polluted waters, he was always the one watching for mysteries, and he saw dolphins three times at sunset. The first two sightings were distant and unwitnessed by his colleagues, who teased him about being lured by spirits.
The third time, the dolphins swam right up to the boat, circling and slapping the surface. His crewmates Solomon and Akin joked crudely about catching and eating them, with Akin throwing bottle caps at the creatures. Acting on impulse, the father slipped off his sandals and jumped into the water as his crew shouted in alarm.
Underwater, he swam among the dolphins, hearing their chirps and whistles. One nipped his ankle curiously. Locking eyes with one dolphin in the fading orange light, he saw wisdom and cunning, and understood he was swimming with People. After returning to the boat, the crew nicknamed him Secret Salt, convinced he had saltwater in his blood. He took the encounter as a blessing from God.
He notes that Zelu loved this story and always asked for more details about the dolphins. After her accident, the story took on deeper meaning for her, symbolizing freedom, and he believes it gave her confidence and helped pull her out of herself.
