41: Homecoming

Overview

Zelu returns to Chicago, parts emotionally with her exo team and is invited to formally join the company, then faces her family's fury—particularly Chinyere's—over her mother's panic attack triggered by the livestreamed kidnapping. A tender reunion with her mother reveals a shared history of anxiety. Msizi unexpectedly waits at her condo, offering comfort, news of his app's success, and a moment of intimacy, though Zelu remains haunted and unable to sleep.

Summary

At O'Hare Airport, Zelu shares an emotional farewell with Marcy, Hugo, and Uchenna, telling them she loves them—words she rarely speaks. Marcy marvels at Zelu running thirty-five miles on exos, claiming the feat will catapult their company forward. Hugo invites Zelu to formally join the company, and she tentatively agrees. Hugo reminds her that her fans helped save her life and urges her to thank them, though Zelu privately worries that her vulnerability through her writing is what made her a target in the first place.

In baggage claim, Zelu reunites with Chinyere, Tolu, Folashade, and her niece Cricket. She immediately senses something is wrong because her mother didn't come. In the car, the family reveals that her mother watched the livestream and had a severe panic attack, wheezing and feeling faint—something she hadn't experienced since childhood.

Chinyere explodes, blaming Zelu for being selfish: for the MIT injury, for writing one successful book, for going to the village against the family's wishes, for getting kidnapped, and for broadcasting it where their mother could see. Zelu, exhausted by years of similar attacks, says nothing, puts in her AirPods, and tunes everything out.

At her parents' house, Zelu's mother greets her warmly and admits she used to have panic attacks as a girl but learned to manage them, just as Zelu has. After a brief visit and meal, Zelu takes an autonomous vehicle home.

Alone in her condo, Zelu finally breaks down—until she discovers Msizi waiting for her. He flew in from Los Angeles the moment he saw the broadcast. She confesses her guilt about her mother; he reassures her it wasn't her fault. He also reveals that her viral run has brought ten serious investors to his Yebo app. They kiss, and she feels safe—but still cannot sleep.
