Overview

Despite Msizi's ominous plea not to go, Zelu travels to Nigeria with her friends to finally visit her father's grave. After enduring stares, harassment, and being charged extra for her exos, she swims off Tarkwa Bay, where she meets a mysterious Ijaw man who calls her "Mami Wata's daughter" and shows her dolphins. The communion with the ocean gives her the clarity she's been seeking, but Msizi's warning foreshadows danger.

Summary

Zelu prepares to travel to Nigeria to visit her father's grave, two years after his death. Her boyfriend Msizi calls after ten days of silence, urging her not to go because he has a bad feeling—he had spoken with her worried mother first. Zelu, hurt and angry, hangs up on him and continues packing. She flies to Lagos with her MIT friends Hugo, Marcy, and Uchenna.

On the flight and at Lagos airport, Zelu is recognized as the famous writer with exos, drawing constant stares, autograph requests, and being mockingly called "robot ma." An aggressive young man tries to grab her bag, and she pays him twenty dollars to leave her alone. They reach a disability-friendly hotel, and Zelu calls her mother instead of Msizi, declining to stay at the family palace to avoid suitors.

The next morning, the group has breakfast together. Marcy returns to her room to sleep, and Zelu, Hugo, and Uchenna take an Uber and then a boat to Tarkwa Bay Beach. They are charged triple for Zelu's exos, and the boat captain stares and pesters her. Hugo and Uchenna stay on the boat while Zelu detaches her exos, which collapse into a cube, and prepares to swim with elastic bands binding her legs.

Swimming alone in the ocean, Zelu finds a profound sense of communion and freedom. A stranger—a young Ijaw doctor on his lunch break—appears beside her, calls her "Mami Wata's daughter," and tells her Lagos is most beautiful from the water. He points out dolphins swimming around her, echoing a memory of swimming with her father. Zelu floats on her back, deeply moved, and whispers, "Clarity."
