Overview

Zelu's convoy is ambushed by armed kidnappers on the road to the Port Harcourt airport, and she discovers her uncle's worker Ogo orchestrated the attack targeting her specifically. She escapes by running at full speed in her exos for over an hour while broadcasting live on Facebook, becoming a viral global sensation by the time she reaches the airport. The traumatic ordeal cements her desire to leave Nigeria — and increasingly, Earth itself.

Summary

On the drive back to the Port Harcourt airport for their red-eye flight, Zelu reflects on her trip and concludes that her father is gone and that she will never be considered a true "daughter of the soil" in Nigeria, especially with her exos marking her as different. The convoy, escorted by armed guards in flanking SUVs, slows down at twilight on a rural Imo State road.

Suddenly, masked men leap from the trees and ambush the vehicles, smashing windows with AK-47s. The driver throws the keys to the attackers and flees. Pepper spray fills the car as Hugo, Marcy, and Uchenna scramble out. Zelu is dragged from the SUV by men who specifically identify her as the writer they want; she recognizes Ogo, a worker from her uncle Onyemobi's house, as the inside man behind the kidnapping.

When one of the kidnappers is shot in the leg by a returning guard, Zelu makes a split-second decision and runs, using her exos at unprecedented speed. She uses Yebo to call Msizi and Chinyere, but neither answers. She launches a Facebook Live broadcast, narrating her flight to thousands, then millions, of viewers, asking anyone watching to alert her family. Yebo enables GPS tracking to the airport.

After running over an hour at nearly forty-five miles per hour along the dark highway, her exos overheating, Zelu reaches the airport exit ramp, where Nigerian police, reporters, and crowds are waiting. She collapses into the arms of a medic and is taken to a hospital. Before losing consciousness she tells her viewers that if she ever has the chance to leave the planet, to sign her up.

The next morning, Uncle Ralph informs her that the others escaped, that one guard was shot in the leg but will survive, and that Uchenna fought off a kidnapper. He vows that Ogo will face "jungle justice." Zelu discovers her live video has gone viral globally, making her international news. Yebo curates a "Window of Love" of supportive comments, but she is also mocked, and Nigeria is portrayed badly. Overwhelmed, she sets her phone aside.
