Chapter 48
Overview
Chaol, Yrene, Nesryn, and the khaganate royals regroup after Hasar’s arrival gives the defenders of Anielle the advantage, though Sartaq reveals how close he came to catastrophic desperation by considering flooding the plain. Aelin unexpectedly arrives with Rowan and members of her court, reuniting emotionally with Chaol and Yrene and linking Yrene’s healing journey back to Aelin’s earlier act of mercy.
The chapter brings major allied forces and storylines together: Aelin confirms Dorian and Manon are pursuing something crucial, introduces her formidable court, and formally joins the war planning with the southern royals. The reunion shifts the campaign from desperate survival toward coordinated action against Morath.
Summary
After the khagan’s forces strike hard enough to silence Morath’s bone drums, Chaol and Yrene enter Princess Hasar’s war tent with Nesryn. Chaol notices the Ebony sulde planted outside, realizing the khagan has symbolically committed his heir and empire to war. Inside, Chaol’s pain forces him into a chair, while he and Yrene quietly hold hands and think of their future child.
Sartaq explains that although the allied army now outnumbers Morath’s legion, they must choose their next attack carefully because the greater war still lies ahead. Sartaq also admits that before Hasar arrived, he had nearly unleashed the dam to flood the plain as a desperate measure, a plan that would have destroyed both enemies and civilians. The admission underscores the cost of desperation and the need for measured strategy.
A Darghan captain announces unexpected visitors, and Aelin Galathynius enters with Rowan, Gavriel, Lorcan, Fenrys, and Elide. Chaol is stunned because he believed Aelin was in Terrasen, but Aelin’s attention fixes on Chaol standing and walking. Overcome, Aelin embraces him, joyful that Chaol has healed.
Chaol introduces Yrene, but Aelin already knows her name. Yrene reveals the old note Aelin once gave her, thanks Aelin for the money and encouragement that sent her to the Torre Cesme, and explains that she used that chance to become heir apparent to the Healer on High and teach other healers self-defense. Aelin is moved, and Chaol reveals that Yrene is now Yrene Westfall, prompting Aelin to introduce Rowan as her husband and mate.
Chaol credits Nesryn for helping bring the rukhin and the southern army north, and Aelin warmly embraces Nesryn. When Chaol asks about Dorian, Rowan says Dorian is not with them, and Aelin explains that Dorian is with Manon hunting something important, which Chaol understands to mean the Wyrdkeys. Aelin then formally thanks Hasar and Sartaq, learns more southern reinforcements are coming under Kashin, and exchanges pointed banter with Hasar about the letter Aelin once sent asking for aid.
Aelin introduces her companions to the royals: Gavriel, Aedion’s father; Lorcan, now blood-sworn to Aelin despite his former loyalty to Maeve; Fenrys, also blood-sworn and joking about his name; and Elide Lochan of Perranth, another surviving Terrasen noble. Chaol notices that Aelin’s old scars are gone and senses that she has endured something terrible, but she postpones the full story. With introductions complete, Aelin moves to the war map and turns the council toward planning how to defeat the army outside Anielle.
