Chapter 98
Overview
As Rowan feels the mating bond fray, Aelin refuses to accept the gods’ betrayal as her ending. Mala gives Aelin one final gift and reveals Rowan’s hidden Wyrdmark map, allowing Aelin to punish the gods by trapping them with a hell-realm.
Aelin then seals the Lock and the Wyrdgate while preserving the last core of herself. Instead of surrendering to fate, she leaps through the gate as a world-walker, clinging to the hope of returning home.
Summary
Rowan feels the mating bond with Aelin breaking apart. Bent over and panicked, Rowan wraps his magic and soul around the bond as if sheer refusal can keep Aelin from passing beyond his reach. Dorian and Chaol argue nearby, but Rowan can focus only on holding on.
In the space between worlds, the gods abandon Aelin and Erilea, refusing to take Erawan and leaving Elena destroyed. Only Mala remains. Remembering Elena, Brannon, and Aelin as her heir, Mala gives Aelin one final seed of white-hot power in gratitude for Aelin’s attempt to defend Elena and the others.
Mala reveals that Rowan secretly inked Wyrdmarks into Aelin’s tattoo, creating a map back to him. Realizing she has a lifeline home, Aelin turns her rage on the gods. After Mala enters their world, Aelin opens a portal above them into a hell-realm she had once glimpsed, then closes the gods inside with the howling darkness.
Aelin then completes the final task: sealing the Lock. She pours Mala’s gift into it, commanding every doorway between worlds to close, but refuses to surrender the last essential kernel of herself. Holding to her mother’s old promise that her heart will lead her home, Aelin resists becoming another sacrifice.
As the archway to Erilea begins to seal, Aelin claims a new identity as a world-walker rather than a doomed queen. She tears away the last great portion of Mala’s borrowed power, hurls it into the Lock, and leaps through the closing gate, determined to find her way back.
