Chapter 110

Overview

Aelin confronts Maeve and Erawan outside Orynth, masking her weakness with fire, arrogance, and carefully aimed truths meant to delay them and divide their alliance. She plants doubt in Erawan by exposing Maeve’s possible betrayals and pointing toward the healers waiting in the city.

As Aelin begins the fight, Rowan, Fenrys, and Lorcan choose to defend Orynth’s civilians rather than abandon the city to reach her. Elide recognizes Aelin’s stalling for what it is and sees that Yrene may be the key to turning the trap against Erawan.

Summary

Aelin faces Maeve and Erawan before Orynth’s southern gate with almost no magic left, but neither enemy realizes how depleted she is. Aelin’s real goal is not victory but delay: every moment she holds the Valg rulers outside the city gives Orynth’s defenders and civilians more time.

Aelin uses bravado and taunts to stall them, reminding Erawan of their past encounters and claiming the gods had meant to destroy him before Aelin intervened. Maeve tries to end the conversation, but Aelin turns Erawan’s attention toward Maeve’s betrayals, suggesting Maeve intended to use healers and world-walking knowledge to remove him.

Maeve attempts to unsettle Aelin by revealing that a low-ranking Valg prince, not Erawan himself, killed Aelin’s parents and Lady Marion. Aelin refuses to be shaken and continues pressing Erawan’s doubts, warning him that healers wait inside Orynth, including Yrene, Silba’s Heir, and implying Maeve has knowingly led him into a trap. When Maeve moves to attack, Aelin declares herself a god and unleashes herself against both enemies.

Inside the city, Rowan tears iron from his shoulder and races toward the southern gate to reach Aelin. As Morath soldiers breach the walls and civilians scream, Rowan realizes Aelin would never forgive him for abandoning Orynth’s people. Fenrys and Lorcan join him, and Rowan chooses to honor their oath to Aelin and Terrasen by turning from the gate to defend the city.

From the walls, Elide watches Aelin fight Maeve and Erawan while Morath overwhelms the battlefield and pours into Orynth. Elide understands that Aelin is only deflecting and buying time because she has almost no power left. Remembering that Aelin leaves paths for others to choose, Elide looks to Yrene and realizes the healer may be the only one who can truly stop Erawan.
