A Better World

Overview

Spring arrives in Terrasen after a winter of rebuilding, diplomacy, and recovery across the continent. Aelin reflects on the return of her people, the endurance of Eyllwe, and the hope of honoring Nehemia’s dream through a repaired world.

At dawn, Aelin and Rowan witness kingsflame blooming across Terrasen, a miraculous sign of renewal and joy. The sight confirms that the kingdom has survived and that Aelin’s sacrifices have helped create the future she fought for.

Summary

After a brutal winter, spring comes to Terrasen. During the snowy months, Aelin and her court have worked on rebuilding Orynth, negotiating trade agreements, and restoring ties with long-isolated kingdoms. The lost Fae of Terrasen return, many wolf-riders join them, and several Fae from Doranelle remain to help, even after Endymion and Sellene go home.

Across the continent, nations begin to recover from war. Eyllwe, despite severe losses, works especially hard to rebuild. Aelin writes to Nehemia’s parents with hope and joy, promising to repair the world together, and their reply affirms that Nehemia would have wanted that future. Aelin keeps their letter on her desk as a promise to make tomorrow worthy of Nehemia’s dream.

In Orynth, Aelin wakes at dawn beside an exhausted Rowan. Their court is tired but happy; Elide and Lorcan have returned to Perranth to rebuild, while the lords are expected back soon for Aedion and Lysandra’s wedding. Aelin reflects with amusement on Lorcan’s new title and on Rowan’s preference for physical labor over courtly duties, though Rowan has promised to dance with Aelin at the wedding.

Aelin follows her morning ritual and steps onto the balcony overlooking Orynth, Terrasen, and the Staghorns. She often comes there to see that the kingdom has survived, sometimes joined by Rowan, who comforts her when grief and loss weigh on Aelin or flies over the land when his heart is troubled or joyful. Aelin recognizes that joy now lives in Rowan, and in herself.

When Aelin reaches the balcony, Aelin stops in awe and calls softly for Rowan. Rowan rushes to her side, and together they see what dawn has revealed. As bells peal and people cry out in wonder, the wind carries an ancient song from Oakwald and the earth itself. Rowan tells Aelin that it is all for her.

Aelin weeps with joy as she sees kingsflame blooming everywhere: across the mountains, beneath Oakwald’s green canopy, and over the Plain of Theralis. The impossible bloom becomes a living sign of Terrasen’s renewal and of the better world Aelin and her allies have fought to make.
