Chapter 116
Overview
In the aftermath of victory, Chaol, Yrene, Nesryn, and Sartaq absorb the impossible collapse of Morath and the end of Erawan’s threat. The chapter shifts from battle survival to futures reclaimed: Chaol and Yrene face new life, while Nesryn chooses a home with Sartaq.
Aelin confirms that Morath’s army will not rise again, spares those who may be freed from Valg control, and finally enters Orynth as its queen. Her return through the cleansed gates marks Terrasen’s liberation and the beginning of restoration.
Summary
Chaol wakes in a stairwell with Yrene beside him, touching his face and weeping with relief. He remembers fighting on the battlements before losing consciousness, then realizes the city is cheering instead of sounding with battle, and no wyverns or enemy noises remain.
As the people of Orynth chant Yrene’s name, Chaol understands that Yrene’s power destroyed Erawan and brought down Morath’s army. Chaol embraces Yrene, shaken by relief, joy, and lingering fear, and Yrene confirms that the war is over. Chaol thinks of Yrene and their unborn child, recognizing that with Erawan and Maeve gone, their life is beginning.
Elsewhere, Nesryn lands on the blood-soaked city walls after seeing the enemy collapse, including the kharankui-hybrids. Nesryn is more concerned for Salkhi, whose eye has been clawed by an ilken sentry, and calls for healers while Sartaq rushes to her in panic, fearing she is hurt.
Healers tend the injured ruks as the city continues chanting Yrene’s name. Nesryn clings to Sartaq, overwhelmed by how close they came to defeat. Sartaq tells Nesryn that victory means they can go home together to the southern continent, and Nesryn accepts the future waiting for them there.
Outside Orynth, Aelin, Rowan, Lorcan, and Fenrys remain on the battlefield until they are certain Morath’s fallen army will not rise again. The khagan’s troops check the bodies, but the allies do not behead those wearing black rings or collars, because healers may yet save them. The pursuit of the last aerial enemies continues into the night.
At last Aelin turns toward Orynth’s southern gate, which opens to welcome her. With Rowan beside her and Lorcan and Fenrys behind, Aelin crosses the threshold into her home city. Using the last dregs of her flame, Aelin cleanses the bloodied stones of the gate, then smiles at her people as Terrasen soldiers and civilians cheer her return.
