Chapter 29
Overview
Rowan and Gavriel infiltrate Cairn’s tent while the camp reels from Rowan’s assault, discovering the place where Aelin was imprisoned and tortured. Gavriel stabilizes the gravely wounded Fenrys, while Rowan confronts the full evidence of Aelin’s suffering.
Rather than kill Cairn outright, Rowan has him healed and chained to his own torture table. The chapter shifts Rowan’s grief and fury into deliberate vengeance, underscoring how deeply Aelin’s captivity has marked everyone fighting for her.
Summary
As Rowan’s attack throws Maeve’s camp into chaos, soldiers rush toward the western destruction, leaving the eastern side easier to infiltrate. Rowan and Gavriel use the confusion to reach Cairn’s isolated tent, following the signal that Aelin has been found and knowing Fenrys may still be inside.
Rowan enters the tent with Gavriel after sending wind ahead to sense two injured life-forms within. Inside, Rowan sees Fenrys unconscious and blood-soaked on the floor, Cairn wounded but alive, and the iron coffin where Aelin had been confined. The torture implements, metal table, chains, and braziers reveal the scale of what Aelin endured there.
Gavriel begins healing Fenrys, and although the white wolf does not wake, Fenrys’s breathing steadies. Rowan then orders Gavriel to heal Cairn as well, not out of mercy but because Rowan wants Cairn alive for what comes next.
Rowan studies Cairn’s tools and selects a thin healer’s knife. Once Gavriel’s magic restores Cairn enough for consciousness, Rowan has Cairn chained to the metal table. Cairn wakes, sees Rowan’s rage and the instruments prepared beside him, and understands Rowan’s intention.
Rowan wraps the tent in an ice-laced wind to block out every sound. With Fenrys stabilized and Cairn helpless, Rowan begins exacting revenge for Aelin’s suffering.
