Chapter Twenty-Two

At dawn, Cal heads to Lena’s, meeting Con McHugh, who offers condolences, proposes poteen for Mart’s wake, and signals the feud’s ebb. Cal waits on Lena’s step, thinking of Mart, until Lena joins him. He reports Tommy’s neutralization; Lena counters that Rachel wasn’t killed—she chose death, coached by Dymphna Duggan, using Noreen’s antifreeze and a note meant to arm Eugene against Tommy. Lena already told Eugene.

They debate disclosure and consequences. Cal favors quiet to let Ardnakelty heal and preserve leverage over Tommy; Lena insists on silence only to honor Rachel’s intent but will tell Claire and Fintan. Tension flares over secrecy and alliances, then eases as they acknowledge how the place has changed them. Cal owns his role in facing Tommy; Lena accepts she, too, lives here. She invites him inside.

After lunch, Cal and P.J. clumsily take up Mart’s chores; Kojak lies desolate, Mart’s tractor and ground still mark the death scene. Senan and Ruairi join, calmly planning flock care and records while Angela Maguire marshals teens to ready the house for the wake. Community rhythms resume around grief.

Back home, Cal tells Trey that Tommy killed Mart but not Rachel; they agree to keep Rachel’s plan private. Cal explains Tommy’s fall from power is punishment enough. Trey offers awkward condolences, reveals she and Kate are “kinda going out,” and asks about her apprenticeship; Cal relents on finishing school.

That evening Lena, Trey, and Kate cook tacos with Cal. Lena coaxes Kojak to eat. The teens share school and future plans; Cal and Lena move together quietly, rings visible, domestic warmth returning. Snow begins to fall—thick, calm—while Kojak steps out and returns to the fire. Inside, with music, food, and shared tasks, a tentative new equilibrium takes hold.
