Chapter Eight
Overview
Lena visits Sheila and learns Rachel came to her hours before dying, worried about something Tommy and Eugene were doing; Sheila refused details, suggests Eugene hurt Rachel, and vows to expose him if Tommy targets her. Cal secures the medical examiner’s timing from Garda Dennis, builds a timeline, and suspects Tommy’s land and council ambitions are tied to Rachel’s death. He resolves to confront Eugene.
Summary
Lena walks to Sheila’s house and they share tea. Sheila confirms Trey’s crew caught Donie and that he won’t return. When Lena presses about Donie’s harassment, she reveals Tommy hired him to push Sheila out and that Tommy earlier tried to steer her to a job in Athlone to move her away.
Discussing Rachel, Sheila discloses Rachel visited her around six on the night she died, distraught and asking how Sheila handled Johnny’s wrongdoing. Rachel said Tommy and Eugene were doing something that would hurt locals; she portrayed Eugene as unable to defy Tommy. Sheila refused to hear specifics to protect her hard-won peace and judged Rachel “soft,” unable to leave Eugene and afraid Tommy would ruin her if she talked.
When Lena asks if Rachel seemed suicidal, Sheila says Rachel was crushed by the Moynihans’ weight. Sheila then warns that if Tommy comes after her via Child Services, she will publicly say Eugene beat Rachel, and asks Lena to back her; Lena agrees.
Cal, seeking clarity and mindful of Tommy’s influence, visits Garda Dennis. Posing concern for Lena, he learns the ME found Rachel ingested antifreeze less than an hour before death, earliest around 7 p.m., after Rachel left Lena and Sheila. The Guards did not pull location history; Dennis says Rachel didn’t contact friends or Eugene that evening, while Eugene called her. Dennis adds the couple had planned a local house build despite earlier Dublin-versus-home tension.
In a café, Cal sketches a timeline: Rachel met Lena around 5:30 and Sheila around 6; antifreeze had to be taken after 7; death between 8 and midnight. He doubts a simple mix-up and weighs Eugene’s capacity to lash out under pressure. Cal lists Tommy’s concurrent agendas—harassing the Reddys, whatever involved Rachel, Eugene’s council run, and land buys—and suspects they are connected. Accepting an obligation to the community, he decides to seek a moment to confront Eugene.
