Chapter Twelve
Overview
Cal informs Lena about Tommy’s fabricated abuse rumor; Lena remains distant and fatalistic. Trey confronts school gossip, learns Lena’s investigation tied Tommy’s land scheme to Rachel’s death, and brings it to Cal. Accepting official channels are compromised, Cal decides to rally Mart and local backing to counter Tommy.
Summary
Cal arrives at Lena’s, tender but urgent, to explain Tommy’s crafted rumor that Cal abused Lena over an affair with Rachel. Lena, numb and expectant of such tactics, minimizes action and deflects. Cal worries for Trey and suspects Tommy killed Rachel; Lena agrees but sees no viable path.
After Cal leaves, Trey bursts in, bruised from fighting a classmate repeating the rumor. Lena, newly resolute, urges Trey to flee Ardnakelty for an apprenticeship far away, calling the place lethal. To justify this, Lena reveals her investigation: Mrs. Duggan’s account of Tommy’s land/CPO scheme and his intimidation. Trey vows retaliation, but Lena warns that direct confrontation only feeds Tommy.
Trey instead decides to tell Cal. She reports Lena’s findings and the school fight at Cal’s house. Cal, furious but cautious, explains there’s no admissible evidence and official channels are compromised. He considers Rachel’s father but sees no entry point.
Recognizing they need local power, Cal tells Trey he’ll bring in Mart Lavin and broader community backing. Trey, wary of Ardnakelty alliances, reluctantly agrees. They plan to proceed carefully, keep information tight, and coordinate with Mart. Over dinner plans, Trey notices Lena’s distance; Cal admits he doesn’t know what’s wrong.
